You have been accidentally deleting messages and want to recover them? Then read the following:
There are two possible scenarios:
A. You have compressed the mailbox since you deleted the messages
In this case you can forget your messages; they are no longer in the mailbox file!
B. You didn't compress
In this case follow this procedure (I assume basic knowledge of the Windows Operating System you are using):
1. Copy the folder with the name of the mail account, you want to recover messages from, to a folder somewhere on your hard disk with the Windows Explorer.
2. Delete all files with the ".IND" extension in the folder with the copy of your mailbox (After this is done, you may close Windows Explorer for the time being.)
3. In FoxMail, create a new account, label it appropriate (eg. Recover, Rescue, or Test), fill in some junk (we won't be using this account for sending or receiving mail) in the remaining fields. I will assume the name of the new account is "Recover".
4. Select the "Recover" account by clicking on it once (left mouse button) and open it.
5. Next, select the mailbox you want to recover data from (even if it is a sub folder, just select the main folder: Inbox, Sent, etc.)
6. Now the real thing starts. Go to the "Tools" entry in the menu, and select "Import" >>> "FoxMail Mailbox" from it, click "Yes" on the next question.
7. A browser window is displayed, point it to the folder in which the copy of your account is stored.
8. Select the right mailbox from the list of files (that can be somewhat of a chore, since subfolders are named "NEWBO#", where "#" is a number)
9. FoxMail will then tell you that no indexes were found (right... we deleted them), and whether it should rebuild it (them); please answer by clicking on the [Yes] button..
FoxMail will now start to import ALL messages stored in that file, also the "deleted" ones!
This may take quite some time, depending on the size of the mailbox.
The messages will be stored in a separate folder which will be created "on the fly".
After this is done, select the messages you wanted to recover, and move them to the original account. You're almost done now!
What is left is cleaning up the mess :). Go to the "Recover" account and select it. Then go to the "Account" entry in the menu and select "Delete" from it, confirm the action by clicking on the [Yes] button.
Next start Windows Explorer and delete the directory with the copy of your account, also go to the FoxMail\Mail directory and delete the "Recover" folder (for some reason FM doesn't do that when deleting the account).
Now... you are done!
Note: It is possible that there is a malformed eMail in a mailbox; in that case FoxMail will report an error, and will stop importing messages. All messages after the malformed one can be considered lost... sad but true!
I have deleted an entire account, can it be recovered?
Well, unless you also cleaned the left-overs, yes you can.
Actually FoxMail leaves everything intact when you delete an account, only the visible signs of the account are gone!
What you would have to do, is start Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer), create a folder called "rescue" or something similar, then move the whole contents of that folder into the newly made folder.
Now, make a new account (enter the logon details of the deleted account if you are going to use the account to receive or send mail. Close FoxMail when done.
When done, copy the files from the 'rescue' folder into the folder of the new account. Start FoxMail again.
Your mail should be back again!
Now the only things left is to clean up the rescue folder, and deleting the old mailfolder, then you are really done!
Probably you performed an automated disk clean-up recently.
Many of the disk cleaning remove so called "zero byte" files, FoxMail however needs these files (although it writes nothing to them), hence leaving you with incomplete (and for the program corrupted) mailboxes.
Be sure NEVER to delete "zero byte" files in the FoxMail directories when using disk cleaning programs. Also, make sure that you regularly back up (see also FAQ Security 02: "I want to back up FoxMail files..." ), you can then restore the "zero byte" files from the backup... in case it accidently happens to you.
File open error:
E:\Program Files\Foxmail\mail\mailboxpath\out.box
The cause of this error turned out to be a corrupt, or otherwise defect, "outbox.BOX".
The Solution:
If you have another account in FoxMail which works perfectly, then copy the "outbox.*" (BOX and IND) files to the directory of where the corrupt file is located; if you don't have a second account... make a temporary one and copy the outbox files from there to the directory of the corrupt one.
When I try to check my emails, I receive the same emails that I received the previous time I checked my mail and in the end of the process I get the message "quit pop3 server failed - ERR overquota copying messages to spool. Temp drop unchanged (122)".
Check the following:
In the top left-hand tree pane of the FoxMail main screen, right-click the account that is causing this problem (the account name is the entry with the orange colored 'peg' in front of it.)
Next, click on "Receive" in the left-hand pane of the new screen that appeared.
Check whether the option 'Leave copy of messages on server' is checked...
If this option is checked, uncheck it... this will take care of the over and over receiving of the same messages, it possibly could take care of the 'over quota' error.
Also, for those of you who use Microsoft Word / Microsoft Office (tm), you should go to the "\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup" (Windows 9x), or "\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP".
Note: In order to see the 'FoxMail.dot' file, your file manager must be set to display hidden/system files too.
Also note that there is a 'foxmail.lnk' in Windows' 'sendto' folder, which would have to be removed.

Everytime I want to access my account, I have to enter my account's password... what is this?
At some point you may have entered an access password (not to be confused with the password to access the mailserver). To get rid of this one, follow the steps below:
Open FoxMail,
Go to the password protected account,
Type in the password that you entered,
Right-click on the account name in the account tree,
Select "Access Password" from the context menu,
Leave both fields empty and click on OK,
Close FoxMail (to write the changes to file).
Start FoxMail again and notice the password being gone.
These steps only work when you know your account access password! If you don't... there is a way out... but for security reasons we won't publish it in this FAQ... search the forums instead!
Browser FireFox, eMail client FoxMail... but clicking a mailto: link in FF won't open FM...
There are several possibilities, first let's go to the obvious:
Start your FF, then in the address bar type: "about:config" (without the quotes).
Next, in the filter bar that will appear type "mail" (again, without the quotes)
Now find the string that says: network.protocol-handler.external.mailto
behind it you see a value "False", right-click on it, and select "Toggle" from the context menu, the value will now change in "True".
The direct result is that, although the cursor doesn't change on a 'mailto' link, double-clicking will open FoxMail in a compose window, the address properly filled...
The cursor will change when you reload the page in FF ({F5} is OK) and hover over the 'mailto' link.
'mailto' links will be recognized as links from that moment on (I tried my little test page).
WHEN THE ABOVE DOESN'T WORK
Then a different solution is:
exit Firefox,
click "Start",
click "Run",
type "firefox.exe -profilemanager" (without quotes) in the "Open:" box (take a note of the space between "e" and "-"),
click "OK",
click "Create Profile",
click "Next",
type a name for the new profile,
click "Finish",
start Firefox with the new profile selected.
Mailto links in Firefox should launch Foxmail now.
To have your extensions back in the new profile:
open Firefox in the original profile,
write down the extensions you want,
download and install them in the new profile (this is a good opportunity to get rid of some of them now ).
To have your bookmarks back in the new profile:
open Firefox in the original profile,
click "Bookmarks",
click "Manage Bookmarks",
click "File",
click "Export" and save the bookmarks to
your desktop,
open Firefox in the new profile,
click "Bookmarks",
click "Manage Bookmarks",
click "File",
click "Import",
select "From File",
click "Next",
select the bookmarks file you saved to the desktop,
click "Open".

Uhm... FoxMail worked perfectly for a number of months, but now increasingly I have problems sending my mail through my ISP/MSP
You probably had a crash, which resulted in a truncated FoxMail. Download the FM50EN installation file (http://foxmail.hazeleger.net is a safe place) and reinstall FoxMail in the same directory as you installed the previous one. The problem should be solved then.
Note: FoxMail will have been reset to its default condition, you will have to apply patches like the date format patches again!
